Administrative Support
First thing is first: Before we can get a therapy dog at the school, we need the support of the school board. This is going to take time and planning in order to get an inspiring presentation to offer. But not only do we need administrative support, we need support of the students, teachers, and people of the community. We have a petition online and waiting for people to sign! The more signatures and support we have, the better chance there will be of having a therapy dog at Shepherd High School. While we continue to write the blog, manage our Facebook Page, and collect signatures, we will preparing to present to the school board our information and ideas.

Choosing a Dog
There are two options: Rescue or breeder. We are far more fond of the rescuing option, as we would be helping not only the students at school but also caring for a dog without a home. Other things of importance are the size, age, and health of the dog. With crowded hallways, it is more appropriate to have a larger dog so they do not get run over or lost. A younger, healthier dog is the best option because once a dog starts to develop health issues, they must be put on leave or retire. The dog will either require training or already be trained.
Training
If the dog requires training, it can take classes with its handler through Mid Michigan Therapy Dogs or register through Therapy Dogs International.
Expectations
The principal will make school wide expectations when it comes to the dog. The rules and regulations will be clearly stated so everyone - both students and staff - understand what actions and behaviors are permitted.
Handler
Who will be taking care of the dog outside of school? This needs to be decided. Whether it is the teacher, a counselor, or a student, it has to be a reliable and caring person.
Outcome
After getting everything above taken care of, you will be able to start bringing the therapy dog to school and putting a smile on students’ faces. In writing, it may sound a little more difficult than it really is. The little bit of effort is worth the amazing effects a therapy dog will have on the school.
